Apply SP3 to an existing SQL instance having SP1

  • Hi,

We have SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services with SP1 on Server A and it's databases ReportServer & ReportServerTempDB on Server B with SQL Server 2005 database engine with SP1.

Here the Reporting services is configured to use Form Based authentication and also used CUSTOM SECURITY EXTENSIONS.

Now, we want to apply SP3 for both Server A & Server B and have couple questions as below:

    1.

Is applying SP3 for a Reporting services instance having CUSTOM security allowed? or any precautions to take. Because I know that we cannot perform In place upgrade for Reporting services, if we have CUSTOM Security extensions. So similarly is there any restriction exist to apply SP3 too?

    2.

For which server, I need to apply SP3 first? Server A or Server B? Does the order matters?

    Thanks

  • Could you please advice me..

    thanks

You are three years late because SQL Server 2005 SP2 is required since 2007, I don't think service pack is related to security definition because if you choose to use Forms authentication in SSRS in all versions and service packs you still need custom security defined.

I think you need to start with service pack two before service pack three and apply in server with reporting services before the server with the ReportServerDB and ReportServerTempDB because the service pack may not affect the databases. Please run tests in development before applying the results to production.

Why do you think to go for SP2 before going with SP3? Because Service packs are cumulative and we can go directly to the latest service pack .i.e SP3 right?

    thanks

If you go directly to Sp3 and something breaks you may not know if it is breaking because of SP2 or SP3, so when you are three years late it is best to add one resolve issues then go to the next.

You can install SP 3 without having to install SP 2 first. Anything broken in SP 2 that is fixed prior to the release of SP 3 will be fixed with SP 3.

SP2 is required for all SSRS development in 2006-7 so this is not standard use of the service pack, this is SSRS specific and not other areas of the product.

SP2 is required for all SSRS development in 2006-7 so this is not standard use of the service pack.

Sounds to me like a server (or servers) weren't upgraded with SP 2 when it was released. No reason you have to install SP 2 before installing SP 3 since it contains all the updates in SP 2 as well.

  • 1.

This is the original post it is about using forms authentication in Windows authentication required SSRS which uses IIS and I would run both service packs, as stated in my original reply in a development box. This server is in .NET 2.0 SP2 uses 2.0 while SP3 uses 3.5.

Where in all of this is .NET mentioned? If .NET 3.5 is not present, you will be prompted to install it before installing the service pack. Installing .NET 3.5 will not impact the existing install of SQL Server.

For all we know, .NET 3.5 has been installed already.

I see no reason to install SP 2 then SP 3 unless Microsoft has posted something to the contrary.

You are talking about relational engine I am talking about SSRS which require the custom security when when forms authentication is used and so we are talking about two different issues.

  • Each service pack is cumulative. So if you install SP3, you're install SP1 and SP2. This is a quote from Microsoft (located here):

Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 3 (SP3) contains hotfixes that were included in cumulative update packages for SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2 from cumulative update package 1 to cumulative update package 9, and fixes to issues that have been reported through our customer feedback platforms. It also includes supportability enhancements and issues that have been reported through Windows Error Reporting.

So to fix the issues that SP2 addresses, just install SP3.

I don't see how any of this applies here. Nothing in the OP indicates anything about MOSS or WSS being involved (but thanks for the links as we may be integrating Reporting Services with WSS/MOSS in the foreseeable future).
