Apply Service Pack 2 / Service Pack 3

  • Hi. I am running SQL Express 2005 9.00.3042.00. This build equates to:

2005 'Fixed' SP2 (use this if SP2 was NOT applied yet - orig. RTM removed)

SQL Express houses our AV database on a named instance.

I am scheduled to install a second instance to house a third party database tomorrow (nothing like leaving it late) 🙂

I would like to apply SQL Services packs 2 and 3. Can I jump straight to SP3 or would the reccomended upgrade path be SP2 then SP3?

I have downloaded Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition Service Pack 2 (SQLEXPR32.EXE) and also

Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition Service Pack 3 (SQLEXPR32.EXE).

These appear to be the full SQL 2005 Express Editions with the service pack applied. Can I install over the top of currrent install to apply the service pack?

    Many Thanks,

    Phil.

I have downloaded Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition Service Pack 2 (SQLEXPR32.EXE) and also

Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition Service Pack 3 (SQLEXPR32.EXE).

SQL Server 2005 Express service packs comes with the SQL Server so backup your databases and install the SP2 first because if you try to install the SP3 it may say you need to install SP2 first.

I am assuming you know the SQLEXPR32.EXE is a special binary for x64 operating system install because SQL Server 2005 Express comes only in x86.

  • Hi Gift. No I did not know that. Are you saying I update using the standard SQL service packs that I would apply to the full version of SQL? I did not think they were applicable to Express?

I downloaded what is thought was the correct version from here:

Note: To upgrade SQL Server 2005 Express Edition, obtain the SP2 version of Express Edition or Express Edition with Advanced Services.

  • I think that link is for the standard SQL Server 2005 SP3 because here are the Express SP2 and SP3 download links.

Yes you should if you turn on the browser service in both and register the Express with the production. Here is a thread with alternative tools you can use to schedule in the Express.
