AOFO - Veritas to Backup SQL Server MDF and LDF

  • Hi Team,

Incase you are aware of this, Please do reply with advantages and disadvantages you have noticed when you are using Windows Open File Backup option in veritas to backup LDF and MDF files of SQL Server using VSS or VSP Provider.

Incase you are not aware of this, There is a option in Vertias Netbackup Software to backup files which are currently in use (locked). So when SQL Server is running, all MDF and LDF used by SQL Server will be locked and when Veritas is trying to backup these files it will received the lock message so it will skip backing up these files. So only the .bak backup files will be backed up in the SQL Server. More details about this option can be found in the attachment.

So Friends, Incase you have anything to share about this option please reply to this topic since we are planning to use this option to have redundant backup incase backup (.bak) files is corrupted, atleast we can use MDF and LDF files.

  • From 'Pro SQL Server 2005 High Availability' by Allan Hirt:

In my experience, 9.9 out of 10 times, an OS-based backup is not equivalent to detaching a database, let alone a true SQL Server backup, unless it interfaces with the VDI as noted earlier. If you are a DBA whose company insists on such a backup strategy and refuses to do a traditional SQL Server backup since the backup program is coming along and attempting to grab the actively changing data and log files, you might want to consider heading for the door . . . and quickly.

Taking a copy of the database files while the database is in use cannot give you a set of files that are transactionally consistent at all.

SQL BAK Explorer - read SQL Server backup file details without SQL Server.
Supports backup files created with SQL Server 2005 up to SQL Server 2017.

  • I've had these types of discussions with our (formerly) Veritas rep and never got a satisfactory result from him. I prefer to do the backup to disk and backup this file. I know VSS is supposed to bring the database to a consistent state so you can grab the .mdf and .ldf files and that's what NetBackup is tapping into, but to be honest I've never put any trust in this sort of process. Also, it doesn't help you in the case where a user calls up and needs the information to a point in time.
