Anyone Using SQL2000 with AMD Opterons?

  • Hi,

We are planning on upgrading our DB servers, and we are looking at HP's DL385 with AMD Opteron chips. We plan on running Windows 2003 server and SQL 2000 on them. Seeing that we haven't really used AMD before, I am curious if anyone out there is using them and/or if you have any pointers or advice about SQL and AMD in general?

I am Doing it with .Net, are you?

  • Hi Newbie,

Since Oct '05 I have been running SBS 2003 which uses server 2003 and sql 2000 on a Supermicro server with two Opterons. All goes very well! I had not set up a whole server before and had to bring over databases from SQL 7. Except for a few little kinks about tranferring permissions and the way 2000 updates table statistics, things went amazingly well. I would highly recommend the Opteron and in particular the Supermicro boxes. Bought mine from International Computer Concepts: decent web site for researching and configuring, great prices and EXCELLENT service!

I believe I read that Microsoft actually tailered their 64 bit OSs to the AMD 64 processors.

    Good luck.
