Anyone Monitoring SQL Server from a Blackberry ?

  • hi DBAs,

I'm interested in finding a way to monitor for failed jobs and errors (not performance) on my blackberry phone.

Assuming I could get around the security aspects, that would be very helpful. Then I could work 😉

    Thanks, John

  • Yeah, I've done it from a Blackberry in the past.

Now I use my iPad and my Droid. There are different ways you can do it with 3rd party tools. My current preference (only partly because I work for them) is Red Gate SQL Monitor. It uses a web based interface, so you can monitor from any device that you can connect from. It also makes it much easier to set up security since you can publish on the company web site but still secure it.

  • Thanks Red Gate evangelist!

  • Silly question: why not just configure SQL server to send job failure etc. e-mails to the e-mail account linked to your Blackberry?

Not a silly question you can do that. In fact, you should set that up, or it's equivalent in whatever 3rd party solution you use. It's just that that is all you can do with the native tools. If you want to be able to see other information you can't. That's why a 3rd party tool is recommended.

Also, from a Blackberry and a Droid and an old Windows phone (Treo), I've connected to the server remotely, but on a 3 inch screen, it's a pain in the bottom to try to get information out of the standad screens.

  • IIRC Idera's Diagnostic Manager has had a mobile interface for quite a few years now. I don't recall for what mobile platforms, but I think blackberry was one of them. I had a client that LOVED it for that feature.

I am confused. I thought SQL server Reporting Services came with every License of SQL server except express so that Administrators can write reports (or download templates) to do exactly this.

No third party tool required if you are willing to write a select from the MSDB table that tracks the SQL Agent Job History. I believe there is even more than one DMO view that has the Job information and execution log data in it.

If you don't want to write any code, or use a report wizzard, or set-up Job Failure notifications with the output of the Job Execution log attached; then you would have to install a third party tool that someone else wrote to look at and return this data.

If you use the SSRS solution for a BlackBerry, you would might need to view the report output as a PDF. Subsriptions are good for sending out a report to an email address in a specific format.

  • I tried the Idera SQL Mobile Manager ( subset of SQL Diagnostic Manger functionality) a few years ago but I found it too dificult to navigate on a small screen. I am an old time DBA ( although my friends all say the "time" can be dropped from that description now...) and never felt a level of comfort making any changes with it versus whipping out my laptop w/ aircard. Maybe the younger generation that grew up with Gameboys and other handheld video games would find it otherwise.

Of course you can build your own. I hadn't realized we'd gone down that road yet. But there is no way with native tools, without doing all your own coding, to get at that kind of information.

I do that, Paul. I have the alert, failure notification working to my blackberry.

Now, I want to manage jobs, restart a job etc.

    I want to work 24x7 😉

  • I use the Idera Mobile Monitor on my Blackberry and it works a treat. Real time graphs, statistics, spid information and the ability to execute queries. The only downside is the small screen but in case of an emergency it can be a life saver.

Also, running queries in meetings always impresses the big cheeses 😎

  • Thanks very much, JasonMorris. That's exactly the tool I have (Mobile manager).

I've not been able to get it to work yet but I will.

One question - Can you see Jobs, restart a failed job by using Mobile Manager? That's what I need the most.

    Thanks for any feedback. John

  • Yes you can do all the things you asked and so much more.

  • Thank you, Jason. Great to hear that. I think it is security settings that are preventing me from accessing the server. I will get that worked out.
