Sometime ago I had several files appear in the Data directory (where all of the Database files are kept). I have the following files and I have no idea what they are but would love to know: Master$4IDR (same byte size as my master.mdf) Mastlog$4IDR (same byte size as my mastlog.ldf) model$4IDR (same byte size as my model.mdf) modellog$4IDR (same byte size as my modellog.ldf) They all have this morning date (5/25/2004) although I first began to see them a couple months ago. Are they from a fouled backup at some time ago? | |

Let me look into my Crystal Ball.......ummm I see that you have Veritas Backup Exec 9.x installed.
Read your documentation on BE 9.x. It says that if you have to restore your SQL Server, you need to restore VERITAS' MASTER Database not the SQL Server one. Or something like that.

oh what are you saying? That Veritas created it? Ick I don't want those files. I have backup redundency from SQL backup on tape and on disk in the backup directory. Can I just deleted those $ files?

Sure, IF YOU DON"T WANT BACKUP EXEC TO WORK ANYMORE! (sorry for the all caps, I just want to emphasize what I'm saying).
Those files are necessary for Backup Exec 9.x to work.
