Sorry to resurrect this old thread, but I wanted to ask a related question.
I have a user that needs access to one of my databases with a query tool. She currently uses query analyzer which was free. We're in the process of upgrading to sql server 2008. From what I can tell, SSMS Express only works against SSMSE databases. I need to provide her with a query tool that is free that can be used against an enterprise database. What are my options?

It's not the greatest choice in the world, but SSMS, Management Studio can be installed and doesn't require a license. As long as you have the SQL Server license itself, you're good to go.
