I setup a Maintenance Plan to backup databases instead of our DBA SQL Agent job. Somehow random databases are being skipped. Sometimes upwards of 80% of them on a server. The agent log doesn't log any failures, just shows everything else being backed up but the skipped databases. How do I troubleshoot something that isn't even logged?

I remember running into that a while back. for whatever reason I could not put my finger on why other than assume the database status was something that resulted in the back being skipped.
I got around it by setting up my own backup job processes. I needed to do that anyway because of the change in filename format that happened with 2008.
The probability of survival is inversely proportional to the angle of arrival.

Our own backup job was doing the same thing...
