analysis server does not release memory

  • Hi,

We are using SQL Server 2000 Analysis Services with SP 3a, with HotFix 145665.

Analysis server configuration is as follows. OS - Microsoft Windows 2000 Advance Server, Version - 5.0.2195 SP 4, 4 processors, 3GB RAM.

Analysis server settings are as follows. Minimum memory allocated-1023 MB, Memory conservation threshold - 2047 MB. In registry setting BackgroundInterval properties value set to 10. We have renamed msmdvldm.exe as msmdvldm_old.exe. When we retrieve data from cube msmdsrv.exe takes memory cumulatively, it does not release memory when it reaches memory conservation threshold. It takes around 3.2 GB of total memory and it gives server out of memory error.

    Any help will be appreciated.

     Thanks and Regards,

    Mr. Praveen Patil

  • This could be a virtual memory issue. See -

    http://www.microsoft.com/sql/community/newsgroups/dgbrowser/en-us/default.mspx?dg=microsoft.public.sqlserver.olap&tid=36533834-9e5d-457a-87da-801d5a592242&cat=&lang=&cr=&sloc=en-us&p=1

Have you used Perfmon object Analysis Server: Agg Cache – Evictions/Sec to see if the cleaner thread is evicting entries. Also where is the information about AS taking 3.2 gig coming from? I’ve never experienced AS taking so much more memory than the conversion threshold.

  • Finally we solved...

    see:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/938077/en-us

we installed "Cumulative Update 2" and the problem seems solved.

    Thanks anyway for your help.

  • Just over 2 1/2 years! I hope it wasn't a sleepless night every night :).

You must have a good memory to remember this post.

    Glad to hear it's fixed.
