Hi,
We are currently running SQL 2005 Ent. on a HP server with AMD Opteron processors. I am going to order a new server today and am looking at a server with Intel processors.
Is there any reason I should not move from AMD to Intel?
Regards,
Terry

They're both good.
There was a long period of time where AMD was ahead of Intel on performance vs price, but not so much any more. Now they're so close it takes sophisticated tests to tell the difference.

I'd agree that right now I don't see much difference. I have SS2K8 Dev on both here, can't really tell the difference.

Normally Intel processers are more expensive, if you have web farms and if you want to virtualise at any time, you might be better off sticking with one type of processor and not mixing and matching, as there have been reported performance and high availability issues with mixing processor types.

Good point since I intend to use the current server as our backup server (either log shipping or replication).
Thanks

That should work fine for log shipping. Just not for clustered virtualization.

Ordering the following before I go home today
* HP DL585, Quad Opteron quad core processors (16 total)
* 32-GB RAM
* 72-GB 15K 6-gb transfer rate for OS
* SAN connectivity via redundant 4Gb fiber channel HBA's
Now I just need to find out if the accounting system we use will run on 64-bit OS and SQL.
Thanks everyone for the feedback!

I had a BioTech client, they had purchased AMD and the some value was mismatching from Intel to AMD, check that if not that the case with you for some scientific calculations.
Thanks
