AlwaysON AG in SQL serer 2012

  • Hi All,

I'm planning to setup AlwayON AG top of fail-over cluster feature enabled for two node replicas.
Can you please suggest me how many IP's require to configure the always AG between two nodes and it is in SQL 2012 on windows Server 2012.

As per my understanding, two IP's for windows cluster and two IP's for AG listener ? is it correct?

    Please confirm.

    Best & Regards,

  • Hi,

The listener require one IP address. In case of two cluster nodes you may consider a file share witness as well. https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/askpfeplat/2012/06/27/clustering-what-exactly-is-a-file-share-witness-and-when-should-i-use-one/

If you are asking that question I BEG you to not be going down this road unless it is just for learning purposes. There is a WORLD of possible PAIN awaiting you otherwise.

If you plan to use an Availability Group in a Windows Server Failover Cluster you need 1 IP and name for the cluster Client Access Point.
You'll need 1 IP and name for each listener you employ.

I urge you to read my stairway to alwayson starting at this link

  • Thank you all your prompt  response.

If One primary and two secondary replica(one Sycn and another one is Async) which means we need a 3 IP's for cluster (CAP) and 3 IP's for AG listener ?
Please correct me If i'm wrong here...

    Thanks in advance!!

Minimum 4, one for each node, one for the windows cluster and the other for the Listener
