AlwaysOn A/G Across two SQL Clusters

  • We are looking to setup an AlwaysOn A/G between two SQL instances across two SQL clusters - one cluster has two nodes the other has three nodes.

Is this possible using WSFC? Does the A/G wizard just handle this?

Firstly, it's not a SQL cluster it's a Windows cluster, SQL server is just a clustered application sitting on top of this.

This is only supported for migration purposes and not a permanent solution. Creating an AlwaysOn group will create a clustered role which cannot be moved between separate Windows Server Failover Cluster environments.

  • Point taken re: first comment. We are looking to setup an A/G Group between two clustered SQL instances.

So this is not really supported?

Once you understand the first comment the rest gets easy 😉

To re cap, An AlwaysOn Availability group across 2 Failover Cluster Instances of SQL Server

    • Across instances within the same Windows Server Failover Cluster is supported, but you'll have no automatic failover capability within the AlwaysOn group
    • Across instances in separate Windows Server Failover Clusters, not supported. Only supported for cross cluster migrations and for the reason I specified above
