Thanks Steve. A tricky question.
The MSDN library on this is contradicting.
The first article in the links below states
An availability group supports a set of read-write primary databases and one to four sets of corresponding secondary databases.
and the second article states
An availability group supports a set of primary databases and one to four sets of corresponding secondary databases.

I have also found contradicting information:
Each set of availability database is hosted by an availability replica. Two types of availability replicas exist: a single primary replica. which hosts the primary databases, and one to four secondary replicas, ...

Found the answer in BOL: up to 8 secondary replicas, including 2 synchronous secondary replicas

Interesting question.
I found the wrong answer in BOL: (the SQL server 2014 version of) Overview of AlwaysOn Availability Groups (SQL Server) states that 2014 supports only 4 secondary replicas (plus 1 primary replica) for an always on availablility group.
I guess I shouldn't believe BOL without first looking to see if it contradicts itself.

The 2014 BOL updates have lagged a bit and I suspect there are doc issues. There are 8 in 2014. If you see it documented as 4, please submit a bug.

OK, done that. Also added community content on the page.
edit: just checked: the page has been updated and is now correct, and the comm content I added is no longer there. But the bug is still "active".
