Always On Availablity Group - Role: Unknown State

  • Morning All,

I have just noticed that two of the 3 nodes in my AlwaysOn Availability Group are showing as Role: Unknown. I am not sure if this is normal?

    Consider, I have 3 Servers: S1001, S3008 and S3007

S1001 is a read-only reporting node: Role Unknown.

S3008 is a readable but unused secondary.

    S3007 is the primary replica.

There doesn't appear to be any problems, other than the little Question Mark on the Icon in Availability Replicas, and the 'Unknown' under ROLE in properties.

EDIT: I should add they are in different Subnets - S3007 and S3008 are in one Subnet and S1001 in another - Could this be the cause?

    Cheers All,

    Alex

  • Even though it's listed as a 2012 issue, it might be worth trying the workaround:

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2689367

  • Hmmm, actually, failing it over back and forth a few times, and it seems to be okay now.. I am not really sure why. OR perhaps its one particular replica server!

I also seem to be having problems with a listener when connecting via JDBC but not with a normal sql connection! Odd.

Anyway thats food for another thread.

Cheers All, I'll report back if I find a definitive cause/solution

    Alex
