I have recently set up an alert which will not fire. I have looked at Microsofts Troubleshooting Alerts and appear to be doing everything asked of me. The error is written to both the sql server log and the windows application log. The alert and job are both enabled. I am running SQL2K with no service packs applied. This is on a WIN2K box.
Any ideas?

Can you give some more details about the alert ?

First, you really need to apply the service packs. Lots of bugs and issues are fixed in them. Sp3a is the latest.
From there, definitely more details are needed.

If you use "net send" as notification method, make sure that domain policy allows "net send".

1) You'll have to stop/start sqlagent if it is the first alert you've defined where sql has to perform some stuff.
2) keep up with servicepacks ! the sqlserver engine gets better and better each time ! (sp3a is the current)

Don't forget to check permissions. Look for the User Account that is the owner of your newly created job. Also, check the User Account that Sql Server Agent service is running under. Go to Start/Settings/Control Panel/Admin Tools/Services. Check the Properties of SQL Agent.
