it looks like I can have 2014 with an AG read only node, however been overruled that vmotion will be failover, can't win that one. I believe they still have to build the one node as a cluster to add the AG Read Only node. does that sound correct.

Depends what the intent is, if you can handle few minutes of downtime then Vmotion is the way to do, you don't need any AG on top of it. If you want to offload some reporting activity and decrease downtime then AG on top of Vmotion might be the way to go.

main goal of AG is the read only node trying to offload some of the reporting

a one node cluster will not support an availability group.
An availability group requires at least 2 replicas which must reside on separate nodes, therefore a 2 node cluster minimum is required

so if I have node that is dedicated to the OLTP then I can not have a read only AG node? So I have to go back and ask for the active/passive cluster to get my AG
