AG DR setup options

  • Hi All,

Need some advice for setting up remote DR setup.

Current we have below AG setup and we are using SQL Server 2017 Enterprise Edition.

We have a 2 node primary and secondary replica's AG configuration in one region USWest in one subnet.

We have a single node for DR which is a different region USEast which is resided in another subnet.

What are the options we can have to add the 3rd node which is in different subnet to AG? we want to configure it as DR site.

    Regards,

    Sam

  • Thanks for posting your issue and hopefully someone will answer soon.

This is an automated bump to increase visibility of your question.

  • Sounds like a search on "multi-subnet Availability Group" would find most of  the information you need. You will want the node in DR to be set up for Asynchronous AG data movement, and you will want to review how the nodes in the cluster are able to vote when it comes to establishing quorum.

Another thing I can tell you from experience that you want to watch out for is the RegisterAllProvidersIP setting for your Listener. Have a look at the below:

    https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/sql-server-support/connection-timeouts-in-multi-subnet-availability-group/ba-p/318334

Also, if you don't have a team of people to help with networking and setting up the Windows cluster or you don't have a great working relationship with those people, you should strongly consider a different solution. AGs require a strong Windows, Networking and Database team to set them up and troubleshoot when things go wrong.
