My girlfriend is a business student that is trying to learn more about BI/Reporting on her own. However, many of the books that are not horrifically expensive charge 4-5x the cost of the book to download their sample databases. I tried getting her to work with the adventure works database \, but all of the Microsoft virtual academy courses are mostly videos. Does anyone know of some decent online courses/ tutorials, mostly with a reporting/analysis/BI focus that are NOT video based? Like me, she loses focus after about 5 minutes of watching the videos since they tend to have a lot of side chatter, dancing around the point and generally being a bit too conversational for either of us to sit through? Something like a good ebook that uses adventureworks or another free sample database.

If she's trying to learn DAX (which you can use in Excel, which she probably knows already), then get Rob Collie's book -- it's on his website powerpivotpro.com I have most of the DAX books, and Rob's book is by far the best introduction to the subject. After that, she could read some of Ferrari & Russo's stuff. The DAX Patterns book is pretty approachable, and available on F & R's website, daxpatterns.com No need to buy anything, you can download all the files and play with them.
