Advantages Over SQL SERVER Always on over Clustering

  • can anyone give the Advantages Over SQL SERVER Always on over Clustering

  • To start, Always On is not a feature. It's a marketing term. The two features which fall under that marketing terms are Failover Clustering and Availability Groups. Which are you asking about?

what is advantages of Always On over SQL Server Clustering

    1) Don't need shared storage is the most prominent advantage for most I think.

    2) Can set up readable-secondaries. HUGE GOTCHA HERE THOUGH!!

    3) Can have multiple copies of database on different servers, both synchronous and asynchrounous.

    DOWNSIDES

    1) ENTERPRISE ONLY

    2) See item 2 above

    3) ONE thread to move/replay tlog activity. Can be a bottleneck on busy systems

    4) COMPLEX with numerous caveats, provisos, limitations, gotchas. I have seen SOOO many clients and forum posters mess it up by just slapping it into production without knowing what they are doing!!!! And since it is part of HA/DR, if you screw it up you can literally cause your company to go out of business (yes, I have seen bad HA/DR cause that in the real world).
