Adding a node to SQL Server not working

  • Hi,

My company has purchased several new powerful servers for SQL. We are replacing our current cluster with these machines. I am following the Microsoft KB (191545) on getting SQL installed on the new nodes. My issue is when SQL wants to start the install, it says it cannot find the SQLRun_SQL.msi file. I point it at the CD, and it says it is not correct. I am on SQL Server 2005 EE, Service pack 2. This is not allowing me to add the node to my SQL cluster, so any help would be appreciated. This MSI file is not located anywhere on my server.

  • I'm looking on the Technet forums and it looks like others have this problem and it's due to the fact that the installer is looking for the file from the original install location and the installer can't find it there, thus throwing the error.

Re: SQLRUN_SQL.MSI is not valid for Service pack 1 SQL 2005 command line REINSTALL

There's a solution posted by an MS employee to get the install location changed. However, if this is the case with you and you can get the files back to the original install location, that seems to be the easiest solution for those who tried it.

  • Thanks for the response. I ended up copying the SQL Server 2005 installation Disc 1 to the file system. Doing this is any other way would not work. I had read this was a bug, and I know it is fixed in a post-SP2 hotfix. Unfortunately, the SQL server in question could not be upgraded that high. All worked now, and I documented it for the next guy who may have to support this!!
