Adding a new node to an existing cluster - SOS

  • We have a two node active passive SQL cluster using Windows 2003 entreprise and SQL server 2005 standard edition. The hardware of the passive server is not up to the mark. So we are replacing that server.

So basically we plan to take the passive node out of the SQL cluster then disable the windows cluster and take the passive server hardware out todally. Then bring up a new windows 2003 server on new hardware then add that to the windows cluster and then install SQL server on the pasive node through the active node. Does this plan seem correct? This is production environment so I have no option of errors. And yes I do not have a test environment to try this on first- we are a budget strapped organization - at least in the case of IT.

Please any help will be highly appreciated.

    Thank You

  • Once the new node has been added to the cluster, you will need to re-cluster all of the instances. And the client tools and SSIS need to be installed on the new node as well.

Since this is production, give yourself PLENTY OF TIME. Make sure that two nodes are 100% identical interms of hotfixes, drivers, etc. This can be done is advance. Once the node is added, bring down the SQL Server resources, and make sure that the drive comes up on the new node. Figure out what your fallback is. Can you live without the failover node until the next wekend if the re-clustering of the instances fails? Also get authorization to open a support issue with Microsoft if needed. Make sure you know how to run MPS reports, but keep in mind that if you open a support issue, the MS engineer may have a new version for you to run.

There might be a few things that I have forgotten.

    Good luck.
