Add a node to existng cluster setup - sql server 2008

  • Hi,

We have 2 node cluster set up for SQL Server 2008 and want add another node to the existing cluster.

I went through the document SQLServer2008FailoverCluster.docx and from the document:

To add a node to an existing SQL Server failover cluster, you must run SQL Server Setup on the node that is to be added to the SQL Server failover cluster instance

    Question:

While installing sql server 2008 using setup.exe, do we need to provide the virtual server name & sql server instance name again?

    please advice how that works?

and also what need to be done for SQL Server 2005 after adding a new node? do we need to run the SQL Server setup again same as for SQL Server 2008?

    Thanks

OK, before you do any of this you should have joined the new node to the existing Windows cluster and provisioned any storage that is already presented to the existing cluster nodes.

    With that said

For a SQL Server 2008 system launch setup from the CD\DVD and select the "add node to a SQL Server cluster" option.

For a SQL Server 2005 system, launch setup via add\remove programs from the active node. Select the clustered instance to maintain and when the "Maintain virtual server" option appears, select this and you then have the ability to select available cluster nodes or deselect existing nodes (except the node you are on)
