Activity Monitor - Error and Overview Graphs Not Displayed

  • I just installed SQL 2008 Management Studio and I am recieving the following error message when I open Activity Monitor for SQL 2005 Standard Edition SP3 server. All SQL 2005 SP2 servers display the graphs without error.

    The Server is running Windows Server 2008 (64Bit) with 16GB RAM

    ===================================

    The Activity Monitor is unable to execute queries against server .

    Activity Monitor for this instance will be placed into a paused state.

    Use the context menu in the overview pane to resume the Activity Monitor.

    ===================================

    Unable to find SQL Server process ID 5472 on server (Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.ResourceMonitoring)

  • I installed SP3 on my SQL2005 cluster running Windows Server 2003 today and could not duplicate the problem. So I ruled out SP3 as being the cause. I did however find the solution. The server in question is running on Windows Server 2008. I enabled the Performance Counter DLL Host service and the issue was resolved.

  • Thanks for this post. There is a ton of bad information surrounding this problem. Changing the service from manual to automatic and starting it up worked well and now I can start Activity monitor using SSMS. this pertained to 64 bit 2008 install on win 7

  • I see this issue many times in my old environment so many times as the server is already busy with tons of requests, Activity monitor hangs and displays timeouts for activity monitor

    But then I decide its not worth using Activty Monitor in peak busy time as it is also a overhead to the server so then I decide to use the activty monitor script which also includes the headblocker here[/url]
