Active-Passive Clustering

  • Hi

We have a SQL2005 up and running as standalone box. Now I need to build another box and then cluster them as Active-Passive. We need to minimize the downtime as much as possible.

Could you please advice what is the best way and steps to do this?

    Thanks

  • What is your time window?

  • I'm assuming you know something about clustering. If you don't, then you probably should hire someone (consultant) that does. Asking a general question like that concerns me. If you know something about clustering, I apologize.

You need to be sure that your clustered hardware is on the Windows HCL. You can't just take two boxes and make them a cluster.

Also, what problem are you trying to solve. There are other HA technologies, like mirroring, that might work better.

  • are you planning to use same SQL Server name?

Thanks for the advices and I am sorry for late reply.

I actually completed this clustering now. I found no way to directly upgrade standalone instance to clustered one. However, I installed a new named instance and migrated existing DB to the new clustered one before shutting down the standalone instance.

If anyone have any better idea, please share.
