Active directory implementation

  • Hi all:

I am not a server support person so bear with me.  My Operations team is in the process of preparing for the implementation of Active Directory.  They say they are doing an in place upgrade  and will only be upgrading the domain controllers (atleast initially).  I am wondering if this will have have any impact on my 30+ SQL servers that I am responsible for (some windows 2000 and some 2003 as well as versions 6.5, 7.0, 2000 of SQL).   Some use windows authentication but I dont know if I will have to perform any administration on the servers to make them work in the active directory environment.  Will the logins (domain\user) still work after the upgrade.

    Any info would be apreciated.

    Thanks

  • Don't hold me to this... But, my feeling is that the database security will change seemlessly although they may require a restart.

  • If they are doing an in-place upgrade the groups, domain name, etc., should stay the same. So too should the SIDs, if I remember right. Therefore there should be little, if any, change in your environment. One thing you'll probably want to get in on, though, is the testing. We've done this with our DBAs in our AD test environment. We have a more complex implementation as we're doing a side-by-side, but still, testing is key.

If they don't have a test environment, strongly suggest they get one. They'll need to get familiar with directory recovery procedures, FSMO seizures, and the like, because those are aspects not in an NT4 environment.

  • We did an in-place upgrade from NT to AD.  There was no effect on the SQL servers at all.  Piece of cake.

So long, and thanks for all the fish,
