  Is it possible to set up an authentication and access control structure for SQL Server 2005 that uses Active Directory? If so, can you recommend any good links or references that explain this for a newbie?

  Yes, you can. You can grant a Windows user or group access to SQL Server as a login. This is a good starting point from Books Online:

  Principals (Database Engine)

  I know it says 2008, but the 2005 documentation link is on that page and it hasn't really changed between the two versions.
