let me know if there is any risk to removing a node from the SQL instances on the cluster…they need to get the hardware there is nothing currently running on node2 but there is a live DB running on node1
They need to have the hardware removed from node 2. this is active/passive senario.
I can take care of suspending backups and monitoring – but want to know the risk involved and if it can be done live….of removing this server from the cluster…what affect does it have on the other node?

- you need to keep in mind it takes +- 30 seconds to fail over a sql instance.
- Applications will have to reconnect.
- Let's hope your applications can cope with this 30sec unavailability.

Is thier anyway i can make node 2 offline and upgrade hardware.

Yes. Log into node 1 and open Windows Cluster Administrator. Enter the cluster name and connect to it. Click on the Cluster Group and make sure Node 1 is the Owner. If not, right click on the Cluster Group and click Move Group to fail it over to Node 1.
Since Node 2 is now the passive node you can take it down and upgrade the hardware.

what will happen if the node one goes down in case of upgrading hardware at node 2, how the failove works at that time.

the failover will not work until the cluster admin can failover to an available active node
