When I had Babel Fish translate what it gave me in German (Ich muß Babel Fischübersetzung verwenden, um Sie heraus darzustellen Halteseile!) back to English, that's when I gave me the reverse translation of "I must use Babel fish translation to represent around you cords out!" Babel Fish can't even understand its own translations. Ha! Ha!

"I have to use Babel Fish translation to figure out what you are saying."
=>
"Ich musste Babel Fisch verwenden, um herauszufinden, was Du (Sie) gesagt hast."
I think we'll stick to english.
Although I'm far from good in english writing I think I'm better than this computer program.

I use it sometimes with my French customers and although it is better than babelfish it still doesn't replace linguistic ability.
For some vague reason my study of the French language did not have much to do with computers and more with ordering a good French red wine from the waiter. Hindsight is 20-20.
Frank - I had 4 years of German in high school, enough to vaguely transalate a word or three. Certainly not enough to converse with intelligence. I would do a lot of nodding sagely.

Sorry all, I thought I'd practice my German because (as Frank knows) I will be in Germany starting next weeks for several weeks of temporary military duty. Since it wasn't a technical topic I didn't sweat the non-understanding. In the future I will provide a translation, although I don't plan to do this once I am back.
I am glad to hear that the mechanical translation was not clear, because I certainly did not understand it.
In German/auf Deutsch:
Verzeihung. Ich moechte mein Deutsch ueben, weil (wie Frank schon weisst) naechste Woche fahre ich nach Deutschland um viele Wochen behilfsmaesigen Militaerdienst zu tun. Weil es von keine technische Thema handelt, macht es mir keine Sorge, wenn anderen es nicht verstehen hatte. Im Zukunft wird ich das Deutsch uebersetzen, aber ich habe keine Planen dies weiterzumachen, wenn ich zuruckgekommen bin.
Es freut mich, dass die Uebersetzung des Computers nicht klar war, weil ich es gar nicht verstanden hatte.

I understood some of that. Scary how much is still around after many years. The verbs (behilfsmaesigen for one) escaped me. I can live with that.

Works really great, because you don't have to care about the language for the words you are searching. Just type in, the program recognizes the language and automatically translated into the other. Works only on english and german, but that's enough for me.
But generally I'm suprised to see how many people got in touch with the german language.
How is this handled in american schools?
Is it mandatory to learn a foreign language?
Are you free to choose?
What are the favorites?

I went to high school back at the dawn of time - so my answers may vary.
We were given the option to learn another language. My high school offered Spanish or German. I was in the frozen north at the time (where there are some German-speaking people) so I chose German.
In college there are always language classes and they are optional. I took two semesters of Spanish.
Yes, we are free to choose a language, if we want to.
No, another language is not mandatory. English is mandatory.
As for the favorites - I now live in Texas and I would guess Spanish would be a favorite. It certainly helps to know the curse words.
As you know I'm learning French - almost finished with my first year.

I'll stick to Geuze or Duvel. 2 Weeks ago I'd stick to plain water .. glad I survived that.
