About a year ago I wanted exactly that. A cheap phone to recieve calls on.
After a bit of digging I found a Nokia 1100. It does phone calls, SMS, and basic clock, reminders etc.
That's it.
The battery can last over two weeks when idle and about a week when in moderate usage.
I also have a 3G camera, java app mini-computer, sony-ericsson which my company provides.
Batteries last two days at best.
Reception seems to be better on the Nokia as well!

I'm with ya, Steve. I recently upgraded from an old just-a-phone Nokia to a RAZR. I've got a Blackberry ball-n-chain from work, too. That Nokia was in-service in *so* many more places, too... including both of our local offices.
Oh, and I'm just a youngin' yet (at heart, at least )

I want 'just a phone' <period> ... the good old days of th Nextel flip phone were great except for the 2 way feature which just encouraged endless babble, incomplete and not thought out communication and terrible manners. If we can get something like 'just a phone' and brand it that way, then maybe it's time for other manufacturers to jump on the wagon. A couple transporation related things come to immediate attention: 'just a car', 'just a minivan' ...

Read this great quote the other week...
"I have always wished that my computer would be as easy to use as my telephone. My wish has come true. I no longer know how to use my telephone." -- Bjarne Stroustrup, inventor of the C++ language.

I don't know if it's necessarily a generational gap thing. The more I do my job, the more I want just a "phone phone" and not a "swiss army phone". And I'm only 25! Then again, I'd prefer to be cellphone free - free from the leash that binds me.
Don't get me wrong - I like our Motorola for home, when we're on the road or just happen to be in areas with our friends. But if I want to take pictures, I'll stick with a digital camera... and as for mp3s, that's what my iTunes on my PC is for... or the CDs in my car. All I want from my phone is voice mail and the ability to make and receive calls. Otherwise, I miss my peace.

Brilliant!
And can anyone tell me if they have actually come across a usable menu on phone. Can't say I've seen too many that worked for me.
Some you can get to the contacts nice and easy, but sending a text takes a truckload of confirmations. Others, you have to be a genius just to do simple functional stuff.

Any fool can build something complicated and the telecoms industry has some of the smartest fools in existence.
In the UK we have "Vodaphone Simple" which is just a phone and just what I want. It also displays your own number at all times.
I also want something with a keypad that can be used by someone whose fingers weren't designed to go up a gnats nostril.
I want a car recharger (for the phone) with a decent cable and metal connections that don't snap within a fortnight.
I want a self destruct mechanism on any phone that plays "Message from the dark side there is", thankfully "Crazy Frog" appears to have been splatted.
I can live with the "24" ring tone. I would prefer a Shrek message "Two words Donkey, SHUT UP".
I would like the "Ashamed of your mobile?" adverts to be stuffed precisely where they shoved the old mobile phone.
I h8 txt. It's XML for dsylexics and I like my thumbs the correct size.

Well in theory... if we were altrusitc and really wanted phone communication free, we'd all have wireless access point with voip phones or soft phones.
http://www.sciam.com has an interesting discourse on 'smart access' points where the phones can jump from wap to wap seemlessly....
as for a phone phone.. you can still buy motorola high power phones and satellitephones are another example.. I'm sure someone online sells them....

And whenever you get a new cell phone you have to rebuild the contact list from scratch. Aargh!

Not always the case ... I use Nextel and their phones store this stuff on a chip. I can even take the chip out of one phone and put it into another Nextel phone and baddah bing ! Everything is there ! Other vendors are going the same route now. But Nextel is the pioneer and has almost 100% compatibility with their own phones. I've had friends have issues non-Nextel phones and their perspective chips not working or just being incompatible.

I always store my contacts on my GSM card. Took the Cingular GSM card out of my Cingular GSM phone, got an ATT phone (now owned by Cingular) and put it in. All contacts, calendar, moved.

Each feature in every gadget is present in it, because (atleast) somebody wants it to be there in it.
Now, if YOU don't want it, don't use it. That's all.
After all, you have the option to use a bullock-cart or the latest high speeding car for your travel.

while i was being a smart ass regarding the cell phone i have 'only' a cell phone from work... its from Telus up here i'm not sure what the equivalent is in the states...
but the key feature is the 'mike' servive ... like a walkie talkie... it will take sms and email messages should i want it... the battery isnt memorable...
but i think of the cell phone as somewhat dated as i feel i get more information from email communication and its a inherently better filing system... i may have to recall a phone call and take notes .. but if i receive an email i have a few places for auditing the info.

Nextel has the walkie talkie feature in the US. I had it briefly, hated it. Annoying to me, but some like it.
It's not always to ignore the features that are there. They get in the way and make the entire device more complicated. For example I have to scroll through items in the menus I wish were never there.

Steve Jones,
I respect you and have enjoyed your rants on many subjects. I do have to say that this is so off topic that I'm lost as to how I can use this news. I mean I have listened to your stories (yours I think) about your horse and your barn and your wife but there was always something else in the article about SQL or the IT industry in general, but telecommunications? I’m only to happy to have grown up before we all got the speaking chip implanted in our heads. All this communication and nothing of real value often said, but I’ll stop there as that is subject others have already shed light on.
The vendors have and continue to try to etch out more and more profit and stuff there coffers by adding all these new features. Often to either get you to switch service or purchase there products. Of course with all the hidden costs tied to those sweet new features. How much revenue was gained from selling ring tones last year Billions, not millions, but Billions for a midi file you can get free of the internet! I could go on and on about crack berries and all the rest until my eyes rolled to the back of my head. The reason they win if because there platforms are proprietary to most users. I mean how do I get a song on my phone or a game without paying for it? The P.C. allowed for a mix and match approach to your tools, now you only have one choice and you pay a premium for it, this must be progress. I do agree simple is good. I also agree that it’s like the old Simpson’s episode where marketing goes on a rampage that only way to kill it is to just don’t look. I own a rotary dial phone at home and turn the cell off when I’m there. As much as I can I use the cell only for work. Ok now for a bit of SQL.
SQL hint #1: Never use a varchar column for a clustered index unless you enjoy page splits.
SQL hint #2: If you roll on to a job and see a huge amount of concatenated primary keys in your database you have a lot of work ahead of you.
Enjoy,
Tony
