I'm doubtless being inexpressibly dim but I don't know what "It depends on whether results are in the grid or text" means.

I had to check to see what the outcome was, as I was surprised that the text would display | ABC|

The text does not get capitalized, it is | abc|

In SSMS, you have a choice of displaying the results in a "spreadsheet-like" grid or as plain text on a "blank sheet of paper".
