Hi all
I didn't know where to post this so just posting this here. I know it's a big topic with so many different perspectives but it would be so awesome to have a Stairway series on Performance Tuning. It could cover things like execution plans, wait stats, baselines, different tools (like Plan Explorer), index tuning, etc etc !!! It's such a valuable subject and can sometimes be intimidating as there is so much out there. I bet there are quite a few gurus who would enjoy writing up something for us??? Hope so anyway 😛

Thanks Gail, those look like some really great books, i will look into them. I just like the idea of a Stairway as it's something to work through in those spare moments where you could worth through a series at your desk, books are sometimes feel like a chore... but agree it's a big topic and the Stairway would have to be pretty high level i guess...

It's something to think about, but it's also a tough topic. What do we cover? All types of objects? Server tuning v index tuning v query tuning? We've debated it, but haven't quite decided what to do.
I could see a stairway on each topic, and maybe an Stairway to Performance Tuning with Indexes is an idea.

I can see its a complex one to tackle, but so so useful. I'm sure whatever you came up with would be valuable! Can you have stairways within stairways? So an overarching Stairway to Performance Tuning, within which are several sub stairways containing as many modules as needed?

Interesting idea. I'll kick it around.

I chatted with Tony about doing something similar some time ago. Didn't really go anywhere though.

I havent written an article here in ages, but I'd be happy to either write or contribute if folks think the articles provide value....

If you're like to start tackling it, I'd look for an outline of 3-5 articles to decide on the flow to take.

Here's an example post of what a "tuning series" might actually start with.

No... not volunteering... I still have way too much on my plate as it is. :pinch:
