We had grand plans when we started this news service. The intent was to build a wire news service that would allow you to get all the SQL Server and database news around the Internet sent to you without you scavenging yourself. And especially you reading the same piece of news from 10 different sources.
It seems that we did a good job and most of you like the service. This is a great newsletter to keep in your inbox and glance at a headline or two throughout the week when you have time.
There was one thing that bothered many people: the name. We called it Database Daily, but we had a once week newsletter. We had planned on growing that into a 2 or 3 times a week, maybe even an every day thing, but over the last two years we've realized that there isn't that much news and most of you don't need another newsletter during the week.
So we've finally changed the name and have a new log. From now on this will be the "Database Weekly" newsletter. Same content, same format, same rambling editor
In other news, there were some very interesting blogs on SQL Server this week, especially on upgrades, performance, and a list of SQL Server 2005 builds, which is a handy little document to have. I'd urge you to check out the list of blog entries this week as they're worth reading.
Intel also released a roadmap of future processors, the Penryn and Nehalem families, which should offer some performance gains over the Core family. The chips are moving to a smaller 45nm process and are looking to get 4 or 8 cores on one die. That could spell some really interesting performance gains for desktops and servers as more software is built to take advantage of this.
Moore's law may be nearing the end for single core chips, but it seems its got a ways to go for sockets.
