Certainly thought-provoking and interesting.
I didn't know the TVC could include SELECTs. I'm not sure how I'll use this knowledge (perhaps prototyping or what-if analysis), but it's kinda fun to play with.

This strikes me as similar to the use of the VALUES clause in unpivoting data.

Should probably include "TOP (1)" in the selects... If, for whatever reason, the predicates allowed more than a single row in their respective result sets, you would get the following error: "Subquery returned more than 1 value. This is not permitted when the subquery follows =, !=, <, <= , >, >= or when the subquery is used as an expression."
