please see attached discovery report.
i had the hpwja from an hp print server install and the sqlexpress from the visual studio 2005 install, then i installed sql server 2008
what i don't understand is the 2 products, 2005 and 2008 listed in the report with no instances? are they just listed like that to show that both 2005 and 2008 are installed? i'm thinking they represent the actual sql server programs and then each instance are akin to pointers that the programs use when working with the particular instance? so the same set of programs is used when working with hpwja or sqlexpress. for example if i created a new 2005 instance and a 2008 instance, they would show as mssql.3 and mssql.4 and the the 2 product listings would still show as they are currently?
one other thing, when i installed 2008 there was never an option for sqlexpress, but that is what is showing now in the configuration?

Looks like you have two 2005 instances installed, both of which are SQLExpress. Then you have the SQLExpress tools installed for 2005 and 2008. If you were to install a new instance it should appear as mssql.3. Are you able to go to the server to verify exactly what is installed?

well i thought the discovery report showed everything that is installed, but i've moved on since the original post, i uninstalled the 2008. i'm attempting to turn off a trace flag for the hpwja instance so i can upgrade it to 2008, as usual my installation seems to be nothing like anything documented anywhere, about trace flags, i started a new post to see if i can get some help with that.
