A Good Reference

  • I changed jobs 3 years ago, and fortunately for me my new employer is very supportive in keeping our skills current. I have attended a few conferences, TechEd the past 3 years, and I go there with specific goals and have had very good results. I really like the opportunity to select specific tracks and dig in deep in the after hours sessions and the opportuntity to meet with industry experts. I have been able to use that time to get some advice on issues/initiatives back at the workplace, its a great environment.

Its also nice to be able to take a peek at something completely out of your area of expertise to broaden your perspective.

One thing that I am looking at currently (as I am sure a bunch of us are) is the are of compliance and security. I am hoping to find some sessions somewhere that can help out in that area, specifically on SQL Server, something like "how to please your auditor and still get your job done" would be good. I am having trouble doing both of those. I am putting together a plan here at our office for our SQL Server Administration, that addresses audit findings and issues, its been a little tough going.

Sessions along those lines I do think would have good response given our current state of the industry (compliance, SOx, etc.)

  • Great idea. I think training would be a much easier sell to management when it's taught by individuals who have actually proven they know what they are talking about and support SQL Server users on a daily basis.

In general I avoid "training" classes because very little is learned and the regurgitation of the training manuals is extremely boring and waste of time.  Conferences are great if you can convince management to send you.

My recommendation would be to have a classes on Security and performance tuning.  What better way to learn how to protect your server then to learn how to hack into it.

Plus it would be great to get some Security/performance best practices from people who've actually done the work rather then just read about it in a book.

I think Orlando is a good idea, due to the more abundant flights and hotels.  Plus like you said, I could bring up the family, stay the weekend and enjoy the sights.  How about a package deal with Disney World?

Looking forward to seeing more info.

  • We are definitely thinking the Disney thing. I know if I had a 3 day class I could probably convince the family to come and cover part of the hotel with work funds.

We'll see what we can do and also be sure we line up some suite hotels so you have a room separate from the kiddies
