SSMS seems to run much much slower than EM. Like if I want to see the details of a particular job step it, SSMS locks up for a probably 15 seconds before it displays the details. EM is able to accomplish this almost instantly. Could this be a configuration issue?
Also in the SSMS job summary window, it list the job name and status. Is there anyway to customize this?

Yes...SSMS is slow there are many complains about it...
They improved in SP2, try to apply SP2 and see if it improve any better along with more memory to your Laptop or Desktop...
Check the Job Activity Monitor to get the better veiw...

I will look into SP2. For some reason though, I can't view the monitor when I right-click jobs.

it is actually UNDER the Jobs folder. Just double click it.
