How about taking time to remember the men and women who have sacrificed their lives for the country we live in and the freedoms we enjoy? I think Memorial Day is actually about them and less about new movies and cookouts. Have you ever taken your kids to a VA Hospital on Memorial Day for the programs offered to remember the fallen and wounded?Just some thoughts about how to spend an hour or two on Memorial Day from a U.S. citizen and Navy veteran.
For me, that goes without saying.

The singular best sci fi movie I have seen as of late is Troll Hunter. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1740707/The start of the movie is a little unusual but it gets going nicely and is very surrealistic. A really awesome movie. What really gets me laughing is that the slightly grumpy troll hunter complains about having no extra pay for having to work night shifts! The special effects I'd say are also well done.
This movie is awesome in its own quirky way. After hearing enough about it to drum up my curiosity, I started watching it late one night just to get an idea of what it was about to finish it some other time. Almost 2 hours later...
Good timing as I had just returned from watching an early screening of 'The Avengers' before checking the daily SSC email.
Both are definitely worth checking out!

'Source Code' was good. I think it came out last year. Good SciFi has good science which it is unfortunately weak on ... but it has a good story.

I watched "The Thirteenth Floor" on Netflix really enjoyed it, though it is a couple years old. I'm not usually into Sci-FI movies but this was more Computer-Techi than Sci-Fi. There haven't been many sci-fi movies worth watching lately, but that's just MHO.On another note, I'd like to give a crisp military salute to all my fellow veterans and those currently active. Enjoy a safe weekend but spend a minute of reflection for those who served and sacrificed everything for a cause whether you agreed with it or not.
I've never heard of "The Thirteenth Floor". I've looked it up on IMDB. Never heard of the director, and am not familiar with any of the actors, but based on your recommendation I'm willing to give it a shot.

Revenant (5/25/2012)
I am surprised that no one (yet) mentioned Inception."Dreams feel real while we're in them. It's only when we wake up that we realize something was actually strange."
Have a great weekend, Steve and all.
I totally loved Inception, Revenant, but I was thinking more recent films.

If you enjoyed The Avengers, be sure to rent Joss Whedon's short-lived Firefly TV series (it failed because of Fox, not the quality of the show), and follow it up with his film Serenity, which (mostly) wrapped up the outstanding plot lines. A great show with great characters. Basically a western in outer space, with a lot of colorful language in Mandarin.I would also recommend The Walking Dead to Battlestar Galactica fans. Seemingly very different shows, but Walking Dead explores a lot of the same themes, just from a different perspective. I don't normally watch "horror" stories, but this is very character-driven, and it messes with its audience in ways Galactica never did.
Yes, yes, yes, about Joss Whedon's Firefly and Serenity! Totally awesome!!

Battleship was appalling but hugely entertaining.
Alexander Skarsgard plays a guy called Stone Hopper. I kept thinking of his brother as "Cole" or "Grass".
The only movies I've bought on DVD have been the Pixar Studios stuff, Spiderman and Lord of the Rings but I'm seriously thinking of adding The Avengers to that. Some really good one-liners in it.
MIB3 got the thumbs up from the wife. Bad guy has a passable English accent which is more-or-less compulsory for a bad guy in an American movie.
Woman in Black is out on DVD so I might rent that. Made me jump alot in the cinema and the book is on my son's exam syllabus.
Prometheus is out on Friday.
Felt really guilty laughing at The Dictator. I'll have to wear a hair shirt for at least a month.
I'm a sucker for a swords and sorcery thing so Snow white and the Huntsmen is on my list.
Pixar Studio's "Brave" is a definite for the end of June!
If you are British and live near Derbyshire then I can recommend cycling the Monsal Trail.

Does the Dictator qualify as Sci-Fi?! 😀 I can't wait to see that one with my son...
I just saw Avengers which wasn't too bad. Maybe I'm getting old, but they are all starting to look and feel the same. I'm more into the series than the movies. Can't wait for the next season of Doctor Who & Torchwood if there is one.
