A Bit of History

Thanks for sharing this experience. I am old enough to remember the announcement of the Sputnik launch successfully into Low earth orbit. Amazing how far the program has progressed. The years and decades ahead should be filled with incredible discoveries and achievements.

    I'm that old too.

    I remember Sputnik 1 in 1957.

The first hard moon landing in 1959, and the first pictures from teh far side the same year.

The first soft moon landing in 1966.

The first manned moon landing in 1969.

And then it all got a bit disappointing:-

The last manned moon landing in 1972.

After the Russian unmanned soft landing and return in 1976, nothing happened at all until 2013 (Chinese soft moon landing about the end of the year).

It's great to see that someone has finally got a booster than can land and be re-used. But will anything be done with it?

    OK, maybe I'm just a pessimist. 🙁

    Tom

  • The rocket engine that landed was inspected and is supposedly able to be re-used, but it's be preserved for testing right now. Not sure if that particular one will be relaunched.

The next step is to re-try a landing on an ocean barge. I'm hoping once that goes well they'll start re-using the rockets, at least a couple times.
