in installing the first node of the sql server 2008 failover cluster the following error occurs:
The cluster group 'Cluster Group' contains resource 'Cluster IP Address' of type 'IP Address' that are not permitted in a SQL cluster group. Ensure the cluster group does not contain SQL resources from another instance or Generic Service types.
what does it mean and what can i do?

ensure the IP address you specify for the SQL Cluster instance is unique. You will need to provide more details of the settings you are specifying during install. Have you check the install log, post a copy if you can

yes, it is.

since i didn't know which ones to select, i selected all of the features.
the error occurs in the step tagged with "Cluster Resource Group".

OK this slightly worries me. How can you expect a stable installation if you do not understand the features you are installing??

the error occurs in the step tagged with "Cluster Resource Group".
Check the resource group you are using for the new instance resources. As a default setup will offer you
SQL Server (yourinstancename)
Otherwise any groups appearing with a green tick are available for selection, you may also type your own group name into the list box if you wish

sorry, i'm still a newbie in this context. i thought like Office, i may just select all of the features or some of them. if i select all of the features, i will get the whole functionality. i'm sorry if i mistook.
then, if i could figure out something from ur words correctly, i think, i've to select the same name as the cluster name instead of the default name u mentioned. right?

no its nothing like Office. Pick your self up a copy of the SQL Server 2008 training kit you can get it reasonably priced from Amazon, this is your best way forward

i read the document. its prerequisites differ from what i'm currently setup. i use Windows Server 2003 instead of 2008, use x86 platform instead of 64 bit, use vSphere Client connected to ESX instead of VMWare Server and many things are completely different. i think for a newbie figuring out how to apply the steps to such a different situations is not an easy job nor applicable.
i just like to know what's wrong that causes the problem i mentioned above to occur. i think i created an MSCS and it's online and working with no problem. the first step of installing SQL Server 2008 succeeded and passed without any problem. so, what does the error itself is saying?
i explained the configuration as it is, and i think i could describe it well. since the error is not indexed with a number, searching for it with its explanation is not an easy job.
i just like to know why is the error and what causes it to occur.
as the error indicates, a sql server 2008 cluster group must not include a resource of type ip address. this is in contrast to creation of the cluster itself. a Windows cluster may not be created without a resource of type ip address, may it?
what can i do? what's wrong?

The document will differ based on your host set up. You should be following the section that installs the SQL Server 2008 failover cluster.
