3GB Switcch

  • Hi,

Can any body tell me what exactly is 3GB Switch used for? Is it for system with more than 16GB of ram or less than and why?

    Thanks,

  • I wnet back and forth on /3GB and AWe for a while. Here's a link that should help. May not tell you EXACTLY what you're asking but it should help you make an informed decision on how to use it (or not).

  • The /3GB and /userva parameters are valid only on boot entries for 32-bit versions of Windows on computers with x86 or x64-based processors.

it shouldnt be used on machines with over 16GB RAM (in fact it could be nearer 12GB RAM)

if your machine has up to 4GB RAM use the /3GB switch

if the machine has between 4 - 8GB RAM use /PAE and /3GB

if the machine has 16GB RAM or more use just /PAE

really if the machine has over 12GB RAM you dont want to use /3GB. In the worst case it can cause the OS to be starved of memory
