32 bit 2005 SQL server and 64 bit 2008 Server

  • Hi everyone. Got a 64 bit 2008 server and want to install a 32 bit 2005 instance. Don't have the 64 bit SQL media on site. Has anyone successfully installed an instance under these conditions or is the System Configuration Checker (SCC) going to error and block the install. Thanks again for everyone being there to help.

Yes - you can install the 32bit version on a 64bit host, but I really have to ask why you would want to do that. Your applications will not know the difference if you install the 64bit version.

  • Thanks Jeffrey. Are you saying that the 32 bit SQL version ("...your applications..." ) can access the same memory amount as the 64 bit version, and also have similar performance in reads, writes, scans and other sql operations?

  • No - the 32bit version of SQL has the same limitations that it would have on a 32bit OS. There is no reason to install the 32bit version on a 64bit OS, but it does work.

  • Thanks for the followup Jeffrey. Per my previous, I can't install the SQL 64 'cause I don't have the media on site, and I'm in a rush... " there's frequently time to do it twice or more, but not sufficient time to do it right once the first time".
