I have added another instance to a stand-alone sql monster 2008r box that has a complete install (database engine, ssrs, ssas). Did not even think of it but did the default on the port. Is it better to force this instance to use a different port (and can it be done without reinstall?

You can change the port number in sql server configuration manager and you'll need to restart the sql server services.
The unique combination is on the IP address and TCP port, if you only have one IP address available on the server i would set a different TCP port.
However, I'm just trying to understand how you've done this as if you install a default instance it will select 1433 the default port. If you install a named instance it automatically uses a random port.
Since you can only install 1 default instance how have you managed to end up with 2 instances using 1433!!

you are correct, 2nd instance will use dynamic port not sure if changing the port is that essential or not

depends on the connections to the instance, if you're receiving connections to the instance through a firewall you would want to set a unique static TCP port to avoid having the port change on a service restart
