HI All
The company i work for purchased some software that uses SQL express, I want to migrate away from SQL 2012 express to 2012 standard edition.
I only have 10 users that need to connect to a database 9 via the application and my self however, the person who set up the application we purchased, added in domain users,and domain admins, if i migrated as is does this mean i have to licence for all users in the domain?
any help please im pretty new to the licencing structure, I am thinking i just need 1 server + 10 CALS

what are you expecting to achieve by moving from SQLexpress?
obviously there will be costs for your company...but what benefits?

Database size, performance express can only use 1gb memory. Cost is not that bad for 1 server and 10 cals so I just need to make sure I'm licensed correctly

It's usually nice to have a backup admin (or two). So long as it does not affect the working of the application, you should be able to remove the domain users group. if you can do that, then you may be able to argue that the server only needs 10 CALs or so.
But be aware, that SQL Server is kind of like $drug, in that once one application starts using it, you usually find other applications want to start using it as well. This could easily put you out of compliance on your Standard Edition server before you realize it.

Be careful in evaluating the move from SQL Express.
Below is some current licensing cost information:
- SQL 2012 'standard' - $1,793 per core, buy in 2 packs - $3,586 - up to 16 CPU cores
- SQL 2012 'enterprise' (server+cal) - $6,874 per core, buy in 2 packs - $13,748 - up to 20 CPU cores
- SQL 2012 'enterprise' - $6,874 per core, buy in 2 packs - $13,748 - no limit
Oh, by the way I believe that there is a minimum core licensing requirement of 4 as well.
Also be wary of your SQL server in externally facing (is accessible outside your organization from the internet) as well.
