Hi All,
I have an issue with our 2012 instances, that I hope someone can help me resolve. I need to change the Database default location for Data and Log. I go into SSMS, and do the change, as I normally would, but when I save, and then pull it up again, to review it, the values have not changed. I scripted it out, and ran it as T-SQL, and I get 0 rows updated as the return message. Checking the registry, it has been updated.
Previous version, like 2005, 2008, etc., allowed this to be changed dynamically.
My thought was to do an instance restart, to see if that fixed the issue, however, I cannot restart any of our 2012 instances, due to them being Prod or UAT, and in use.
I have 2014 installed on my laptop, and it has the same issue. A restart of the instance changed the value.
Is this something that has changed in 2012? Not sure why this couldn't continue to be dynamic, and I couldn't find anything on Google to indicate it had changed.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Leonard

It does appear to be a change in behaviour since 2012. In books online for 2008(http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd206993(v=sql.100).aspx) the need to restart isn't specified, but in the 2012 entry(http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd206993(v=sql.110).aspx) the followup states you must restart to complete the change.

Thanks Bob. Missed that in my earlier search. I guess MS must have had their reasons for changing it.
