You can use 2005 Management Studio for 2008 databases, but you need SP3 and even then I've seen issues. IMO your best bet is to install the 2008 client tools where you need them. According to MS's FAQs on licensing...
"Q. Do I need a separate license to run the SQL Server tools and analysis services?
A. No, a separate license is not required. However, any device that has SQL Server tools or technologies installed must have a valid SQL Server license."

My interpretation is you have a valid license so you're good to install the client tools.
