Are there any limitations on the developer edition of sql 2005? I'd like to use it for training a few users...No production work, but they will need to access it over the network.
The alternative is the trial version. If I de-install that software from a server, are re-install's permitted? I'm thinking no, but I'd like to be sure. Thanks for any advice.

that's kind of fuzzy. if someone else is accessing it over the internet for training purposes, then it's obviously not being used only by you (the developer) for development. so from a strict standpoint, that would be a violation of the licensing agreement. but if it's just temporary, i don't think microsoft will come after you. 😉
however, if you're getting paid to train those folks, then it would definitely be considered production use since it's supporting your business/services.

Agreed - the developer edition isn't limited, but the issue is licensing. Technically developer edition "is licensed only for development, test, and demo use" (quoting from its licensing page), so I'd say you're probably stretching the limits. But - it's all legalese to me.
Also - if you were going to lean towards the favorable interpretation, you would (again, "technically") need to purchase a developer edition license per person, since that is how Dev. edition is licensed (not per server, per developer seat).

I'm not getting paid. I am interested in knowing the limitations on the developer edition and if I can reinstall trail software. Thanks for the info.

you can re-install the trial, but the ticker will still be running from your original install. so you won't be able to get around the 180 day limit.
like i said, if it's temporary i don't think you have anything to worry about by using the developer edition. you didn't mention what you're training the folks on, but have you considered the express edition?

The Express edition would be ok, but I am also studying for my last sql 2005 exam...70-444.
Since the dev edition is licensed per user, that is a bit of a pain. I think we may have to go with the trial version. Issue solved for now.
FYI: I would be training a few olks on basic sql...not rocket science.
Have a great weekend...
