2 DBs on 1 Device SQL Server 6.5

  • I am by default the administrator of a 6.5 server (I'm a programmer by trade).

I am wondering if it is o.k. to have more than one database on a device. If I do so are there any problems I need to watch?

On a related note- The database that is currently on the device will not shrink because of an index. I have rebuilt the index many times. The database is roughly half full but will not compress any more. When I look at the index in EM it does not give me the option to drop it (It is the primary key and consists of all columns in the table)

I am a bit hesitant to move the database off the device- delete the device and rebuild the database on a new smaller device. I don't want to screw it up and lose my database. I was hoping I could just keep shrinking the current database and grow the new database on the same device.

    Sorry to go on but

    - is having 2 dbs on the same device a good idea?

    - how can I get a database to shrink further when an index interferes w/that shrinking?

    I would appreciate any advice.

    thanks,

    Ron

  • I've always had one db per device. I suspect the only issue is really with backup and restore. I would move it, but that would be for better organization and not any other reason.
