Fun with Computers

,

I wasn't strapped for an editorial, but was going for a more fun poll this week. I actually thought this one up awhile ago as I was writing one of the more serious polls, but I decided to save it for a good, quiet week and this is it.

The whole entertainment aspect of computing is growing tremendously and we're slowly seeing a convergence of computing capabilities in our living rooms with our entertainment systems. From TiVo-type devices to Nokia Internet Tablets to XBOX 360s and Playstations hooked up to rocker chairs with speakers that can enhance our games and movies. Home theater is becoming a common feature for many US homes, not a high-end extravagance. And that doesn't even count how many people are using Media Center Edition for their entertainment.

I'm not a huge gaming fan, but I think that computers have definitely made some great strides in the world of gaming that let us enjoy our spare time a bit more. So, this Friday I'm looking for ideas.

What's a great computing game you play?

Not the long term, life altering games like World of Warcraft, but something you play to while away a few minutes here and there. I'm kind of boring. While I grew up with Atari and arcades, I'm more of a simple fan. I actually have two favorites that I spend time with.

The first is Solitaire. Not the Windows version, but a small handheld electronic version that I play the "Vegas" game on: once through the deck, one card at a time. My wife and I both love these games, taking them on trips, etc. and we have 3 or 4 of them that we've worn out. It's a quick, simple way to pass 2 minutes or 20.

The second game is Backgammon, usually on Zone.com, playing with people all over the world. I can spend 5 minutes on a match and really enjoy it. I've even played with my wife when one of us is traveling. We can chat (online or on the phone), while enjoying a game together.

I like simple games like these, but I really like the portability of many electronic versions of games. I like Backgammon because the board isn't always readily available and it can be hard to find someone to play with. I like portable Solitaire because I don't have to mess with a bunch of cards.

Of course, I'm always ready to spend a few minutes playing Halo as well with my 9 year old. Snuggling next to him on a bean bag and saving the human race can get a great way to burn an hour with him 🙂

Podcast Notes

I appreciate all the feedback from people and I really am working on video. Mostly it's a question of getting some decent editing skills and then building up my pipeline so I can support a daily video editorial as well as the audio. Actually I'd be interested to know which you prefer. Send me a note.

Music from Everyday Jones, everydayjones.com. They're not related to me, but I think the music is great and they're starving artists, so if you like it, send them a donation, buy a CD or something.

And if you're in a band, send me a sample of some music. I'd love to feature some SQLServerCentral.com community talent.
