This site really is about business intelligence, but it is good to mix things up a bit every now and then. Also, I was told by my boss that blogs should be a way for people to get to know who we are. And sure…I work a ton, and as such I increase my skills in all aspects of my career, but I am also a family man. I have an awesome wife and two wonderful children that I would do whatever I could to change the World to help them have a better future. In college, we called ourselves “World Changers”. It always reminded me of a story that I once read and it goes something like this:
If I had only changed myself first
When I was young and free and my imagination had no limits I dreamed of changing the world. As I grew older and wiser and realized the world would not change I shortened my sights somewhat and decided to change only my country: but it too seemed immovable. As I grew into my twilight years I settled on changing only my family and those closest to me, but alas they would have none of it. Now as I lay on my deathbed and I suddenly realize that if I had only changed myself first, then by example I could perhaps have changed my family, and from their inspiration and encouragement to me I would have been better able to help my country and from there I may even have been able to change the world. (Taken from the tomb of a Bishop in Westminster Abbey 1100 A.D).
I have learned so much from this saying and many others like it. I personally don’t try to change the World around me. I realize that it is “immovable”. I don’t try to change others, although I do try to encourage those around me be the best version of themselves that they can! I especially encourage my children! I reward them for making positive choices, reading books and getting good grades! All of which will make their lives easier in the future. But this isn’t what my blog is about either…
I am truly blessed and I am thankful for everything that I have. However, I think it is time for me to try and make a bigger impact on the lives of my children. So, this post is about getting the word out about some of the inadequacies of the current culture around us. At least from the educational perspective!
Over the weekend, I watched a documentary that quite honestly had my eyes watering from the corners. No they’re not tears! Ok, maybe the beginning of some. J At any rate, the name of the movie is called “Waiting for Superman”. And I encourage you to watch the movie. Rent it on Netflix, Blockbuster or get it from your library if they have it! However you choose to get it, just please take a little time out of your day and watch it.
At the end of the movie they have some very good words of wisdom! So, please don’t just turn off your electronics and go to bed. Here are some of those final words:
Great schools won’t come from winning the lottery
They won’t come from “Superman”
They will come from YOU!
They encourage people to share this message and join the movement. They also ask to text the word “POSSIBLE” to 77177. Let’s join the movement! You can get more details on how you can help at WaitingForSuperman.com. Keep an open mind, go watch it and then come back here and let me know what you think!
