I’ve just scheduled two new podcast recording sessions! These are live, half hour sessions – you can join in listen, or share comments. Here’s what we’ll be talking about….
Employee Agreements and Contracts for DBAs and Devs: Anti-patterns
Fri, Aug 10, 4PM PDT
When you take a new job in IT, within the paperwork there often lurks an employee agreement: a contract between you and your employer. In this half-hour live episode we’ll talk about why these contracts exist, and multiple anti-patterns you should avoid.
This is the first of a two part series. In the following episode, we’ll talk best practices for understanding and negotiating the contract.
Employee Agreements and Contracts for DBAs and Devs: Best Practices
Fri, Aug 17, 4PM PDT
So you’ve got an employee agreement in front of you: now what? In this half-hour live episode, we’ll talk about practical steps you should take to make sure that you understand the terms of your contract, and how to potentially negotiate the terms.
A note on the timing
I know that 4PM on Fridays isn’t great for a lot of folks. But for me, I think it may be a great time to settle down with a cup of tea or a glass of wine and reflect on a topic at the end of the week. I’m going to test out recording two episodes in this new time slot and see how it goes.
If you can’t attend live, you can always catch the podcast with a podcast app, iTunes, YouTube, or via the episode archive.
Episode inspiration
I recently came across a series of tweets by Stephanie Hulburt, and realized: employee agreements are something I have experience with, from both sides of the table! I’m looking forward to sharing what I know to hopefully make this process easier to navigate for others.
Thinking back on the week. A dev was angry at us for wanting to negotiate contract terms. Biz person was fine, dev was mad. I realized he has cognitive dissonance between probably never negotiating his employment contract terms & us wanting to do it with just a limited contract.
